Superb Museums of the Isthmus

"Are there many museums in Panama City, or within the country itself?" I had finally asked our Panamanian guide, Alex, the question that had been nagging me since I had started building the trip's itinerary nearly a year ago. A Google Maps search had yielded only six museums for the entirety of the country, but I trusted Alex would have the most accurate answer - so far, he always had.

"No, not really, especially not outside of Panama City. But we will go to the Biomuseo at the end of the trip," answered our matter-of-fact leader, assuring me that I would have my turn at more than the usual birding outing. I accepted the answer with the understanding that we were collectively eager to get out and experience Panama first-hand, not through exhibits.

But this museum gal was in for a treat! After quick, whirlwind tours of not one but two museums, I left Panama quite impressed with the level of artistry in exhibit design demonstrated by both -

Museo del Canal - The historic district's preeminent museum dedicated to sharing the full story of the Panama Canal - has thought-provoking stories and beautifully-designed displays spread across three floors of a stunning building. The impacts imposed upon the people, wildlife, and waterways of central Panama by the Canal throughout its lifetime are expertly shared through a variety of mediums. Biomuseo -  This unique museum of Panama's equally unique biodiversity, by contrast, is everything modern, especially the riveting building, designed by famed architect, Frank Gehry. The exhibits are incredibly immersive, as we noticed an abundance of sights and sounds surrounding us as we moved throughout the distinct galleries. The entire museum is presented bilingually.
