Mary Griggs Burke Art Collection

From the Cable Natural History Museum archives:

"Birds and Flowers of Summer and Autumn" by Shikibu Terutada.

Along with establishing the Cable Natural History Museum, Mary Griggs Burke assembled a collection of Japanese art, encompassing artworks from the prehistoric era to the present day. Also including art from China and Korea, the collection was exhibited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1975 and by the Tokyo National Museum in 1985.

Mrs. Burke once said that her goal was "to awaken in the people who live in this area an appreciation of what they have which is unique - beautiful natural surroundings, clean air to breathe, silence to listen to and the chance to learn the ways of the world's creatures other than man." We can see how the inclusion of the natural world into Japanese art is reflected in both of her loves - the Northwoods and Japanese art.
