Specimen of the Month: Waabizheshi
The American marten (Martes americana) is native to our region. These mammals are opportunistic predators, feeding on available rodents, birds, and sometimes insects, fruit, and carrion. |
The marten is a respected being in Ojibwe culture. This clan animal is known as an excellent hunter; members of this clan have traditionally been associated with warriors. The Ojibwe people are indigenous to the Great Lakes region, and their historical and persisting knowledge of regional animals has a lot of depth.
Indigenous cultures in every area around the world have used stories to explain natural phenomena for thousands of years. It's important to note that stories within the Ojibwe culture have traditionally been shared orally—not written down until recent history.
Waabizheshi's Journey was written and illustrated by the members of the Mashkisibi Boys and Girls Club and edited by undergraduate student Ally Scott. |
Waabizheshi's Journey was purposely written and illustrated to be experienced as a book. This story was created by Ojibwe children of the Mashkisibi Boys and Girls Club. You can enjoy a copy of the story in-hand during a visit to the Museum this month!
