Volunteer Spotlight: Rose

I've had the pleasure of working alongside a handful of superb collections volunteers over the past few years. Each contribute invaluable insight and energy into the work we do at the Museum. This week, we'll learn a bit more about Rose - a consistent steward of our collections records for the past year and a half! Rose has been instrumental in helping to process and update records, particularly as our other volunteer, Jan, prepares pressed plant specimens for our herbarium. Teamwork truly makes things happen!

This is one of many specimens that Rose has helped to
document  - maintaining long-term information only makes our
specimens more valuable over time!

In your own words, tell us about your volunteer work at the Cable Natural History Museum, and how you became involved.

I became involved in volunteer work at the Cable Natural History Museum last summer because I was looking to help in the area and natural history interested me. Starting in July 2021, I worked at the front desk to greet people as they arrive, known as a Docent. You get to meet a lot of people from the area and those who are just visiting. Then last September, I started assisting with inputting the Museum collections data into the computer. You get to see the actual scientific name for common plants, insects, and animals.

Can you describe a favorite museum specimen, display, or exhibit? It doesn't have to be from the Cable Natural History Museum!

My favorite part of the Museum is their wildlife collection. You can view an animal that you would not be able to get that close to in the wild.

What are some of your hobbies/interests involving the natural world? What would you like to learn or what new skills would you like to develop?

Anything outdoors viewing birds and animals. I like flowering plants and would like to be able to select plants for our soil type that help the pollinators.

What's one thing you wish everyone knew about the Museum or our collection?

The Museum offers a lot of opportunities for anyone wanting to learn more about the natural history around them. They offer both youth and adult programs, if interested you really need to check out their website

Thanks, Rose!
